Cultured is a range designed as a counter statement to exclusive radical cultural positions that are currently roaming the global political landscape. The range is informed by tourism and the mixing of cultures and personalisation of culture through travel. It bases on the belief that every person who travels will take and learn a piece from every culture they discover which then creates a hybrid culture for each individual and their biography.
The issues are explored through collage, creating visual hybrids of many cultures and the tourist culture and dress that unifies the travelling tribe. Technically enhanced by handknitting, patchworking and personlised textile print involving sustainable methods by using second hand materials.
The range is designed with the customer and market level of Walter van Beirendonck in mind. Directed for a politically critical and opin- ionated as well as adventurous customer in terms of styling and innovative garments. The project also considers gay culture, often thematised by van Beirendonck.
